Down in the Trenches

In this vision, I saw many trenches that were dug out all over a vast field. They looked like the trenches that were used in the world wars. These trenches were also dug down to a variety of different depths. I saw people lying in all of these trenches and many of them had fallen asleep. I had the impression that many of these people had been ‘dug in’ for a very long time.

Then, at the end of the field, I saw a high hill with a flagpole on the top. I watched someone attach a standard (flag) to the pole and then raise the flag to the top. After this, I heard the sound of a trumpet being blown. The trumpet was sounding a call for the people to wake up and come forth out of the trenches.

As the trumpet continued to be blown, the sound of it began to wake people up. A few of them began to stand up and gingerly raise their heads up above the trenches to find out where the sound was coming from. As they looked around outside of their trench, they noticed the standard flying on top of the hill. They then knew that the trumpet sound was calling them to gather at the standard, so they climbed up out of the trench and made their way to the top of the hill. After some time, more and more people climbed out of the trenches and made their way up to the top of the hill assembling around the standard.

Afterward, I could see that those who were gathered around the standard had become a great army.

Interpretation:

All people are born into a spiritual war which is being waged on the battle field of Earth. Satan is waring against God to keep mankind from truly knowing and loving God. He endeavors to get us so deeply entrenched in the world that we fall asleep spiritually and eventually die without knowing God.

Satan has even been able to draw many Christians away from their first love, who is God. This has caused many to become entrenched in the world and lulled back into spiritual sleep again. For these, their trench has become their place of refuge. It is their place of protection; it is what they trust in and rely on. Whether it be their family, their job, their money, their home or themselves, they are trusting and relying on something or someone other than God. Anything other than God is a false refuge, and unless they wake up, this false refuge – this trench will eventually become their grave.

This vision also depicts how many Christians are ‘dug in’ to their positions of doctrinal belief. But being ‘dug in’ has caused so much division in the body of Christ that many have lost sight of the person of Jesus Christ and of His eternal purposes. His eternal purpose is not only that people would be saved. It is also that we would come to know and love Jesus and His Father with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength and that we would love our neighbor as ourselves. And, His ultimate purpose is that we would live in loving oneness with Him, with His Father, and with our brethren. This is what Jesus prayed for just before He sacrificed His life for us (see John 17:20).

Jesus is our standard. He is sounding His trumpet, calling us to wake up, to look up, to rise up out of the trenches, and to be gathered together unto Him. Jesus will reveal Himself to those who are willing hear and obey His call, and who will set the focus of their heart on Him. These will become His Bride – His great army of love whom He will use to win a great harvest of souls back to the heart of His Father.
